More Dumb Laws 7 is this week’s Mystery Question. Since everyone seems to be enjoying the dumb laws, I thought I’d continue.
But first the photo and verse. The photo is one I took when I traveled to Natchez for research on the Natchez Trace Park Rangers series. It’s taken at Natchez Under-the-Hill on Silver Street. Watching the Mighty Mississippi roll toward New Orleans is so calming, yet so strong, and it always reminds me of the verse from Psalm 46.
Now for last week’s Mystery Question. Just like with dumb crimes, three of these laws are really on some state’s books, and I made one up. Note someone compiled this list in 2011 and some of the laws can be quite old. Can you guess which one I made up?
- It is illegal to educate a bird.
- Donkeys cannot sleep in bathtubs. Arizona, Georgia, and New York!
- You aren’t allowed to cross a street while walking on your hands. Connecticut
- It is unlawful to change clothes in an automobile with the curtains drawn, except in case of fire. Illinois
And the answer is…#1. Congrats to all who guessed correctly! It is getting very difficult to come up with laws as dumb as some of these! As you can see, there are three states where donkeys aren’t allowed to be in bathtubs!
Now for this week’s Mystery Question. Just like with dumb crimes, three of these laws are really on some state’s books, and I made one up. Note someone compiled this list in 2011 and some of the laws can be quite old. Can you guess which one I made up?
- It is illegal to take a French poodle to the opera.
- All cars entering the city limits must first sound their horn to warn the horses of their arrival. No one may wear a bee in their hat.
- Teenagers may not circle the town square more than ten times in an hour.
- Biting someone with your natural teeth is “simple assault”, while biting someone with your false teeth is “aggravated assault”.
Okay Super Sleuths, which one did I make up? Leave your answers in the comments, and I’ll enter you in an August drawing for a book from my library!
Here’s a new puzzle for you to try out!
For those working the puzzles on your phone, here’s one with fewer pieces: 40 piece puzzle

Hi Pam! We’ll see…
I’m going for the poodle. #1
Author
Love your poodle answer, Mary!
Beautiful photo and verse. I think it’s number one. Who’d take a dog to the opera before the days of assistance animals?
Author
Thank you, Vera! We’ll see if it’s #1 next week. And I love the book review on your blog today! https://thewellreadfish.com/2023/08/16/the-stranger-in-the-lifeboat-by-mitch-albom/
I think #3 but #1 and #4 are a hoot! Thanks!

I’m glad I gave you a laugh today, Delores!

Maybe, BN!
That’s a calming Mississippi River. I imagine there are times when it gets pretty mean. I grew up in a town which had a good size river splitting the town. It definitely had a “personality”. That Scripture fits both river moods, too. God can tell the rebel in us to “Be still”, and the troubled in us to “Be still”. Either way, He is God and in control.
Those donkeys must really like bathtubs. Who knew. I never met a donkey in a tub that I didn’t like.
The laws you present today are a riot. I try to imagine some legislative body coming up with these, and the arguments pro and con. Could be a back story for a novel or a movie. I believe you made up #3. Can a bunch of teens circle anything more than 10 times, let alone in an hour?
Tim, when I was a teen, we didn’t have a town square to circle but there were two drive-in restaurants about four or five miles apart on the main highway. In a small city with few options of things for teenagers to do, we circled Donald’s and Ayer’s many times on Friday and Saturday nights. It wasn’t as compact as a city square, so it took twenty minutes or longer to make the loop. I can see potential for circling a city square multiple times in an hour.
Edward, you just brought back some old memories. The same was true of my small town. When I was in high school, my dad told me I was not do the same with drive-ins. He never specified whether that meant the food variety or the movies. I stayed away from both until I was in college. Somewhat later, in a casual conversation with my dad, I mentioned I didn’t know which he meant, so I stayed away from both. He got a big smile, then said it was the restaurants he meant, but he was glad I didn’t hang out at either. I was so naive then, it never occurred to me to even ask why the restriction.

Love your logic, Tim! And I so agree about the river and the verse. Any time I view the Mississippi, it affects me. We’ll see next week if it’s #3.
Well I sure love the photo and Scripture! Beautiful, peaceful and very nice angles and lighting. I guess God gets the credit for the lighting, but you captured it beautifully.
Now onto the challenges of these laws. Mercy! These are dumb. I want to know who’s doing the spying to determine if they were broken or not?
The one about the teeth had me had me bursting out in a snort…simple assault or aggravated assault… 🙂 I don’t know why but it still gets me tickled…maybe because I went to the dentist yesterday.
After all that, I think you made up #2. Now the question is, did you? Lol

I always enjoy your view of my questions, Barbara! So glad I gave you a laugh!! We’ll see next week if it’s #2.
Love seeing the Mighty Mississippi, and bridges fascinate me, especially those crossing major rivers or other bodies of water, such as the Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel. Frankly, I’m not sure if I would trust them if I didn’t know God is in control. Be still and know!
I actually thought about Chicago last week when we were talking about cars with curtains. Today’s laws are tough to figure as usual. I’m going with 4. A bite is a bite, so what difference does it make whether the teeth are real or false? Why would anyone tell a police officer if they had false teeth or not.
Author
As alway your logic fascinates me, Edward…and bridges and rivers fascinate me as well…the book I’m working on will deal with a river and a dam…We’ll see next week if it’s #4.
Another beautiful picture and verse! If only we would make the time to be still in His presence!
Although each “law” is laughable I’ll guess #1
Author
Oh, Mary, if only! Glad I gave you a laugh today…we’ll see next week if it’s #1.
I’m going to say #3, because teens being teens…

Again, the poodle is getting a lot of votes, Megan!
I’m going to guess #1. Strangely the other 3 sound plausible.
Author
We’ll see, Gail. I can’t imagine taking a poodle to an opera…
I’ll go with #1
Author
You’ve picked a popular one, Shelia!
Psalms 46:10 is one of my favorite verses in the Bible & your peaceful picture went with the verse well.
I think that #1 is the law you added.
Your puzzles were fun.
Author
It’s a verse I need to heed every day, Selena! I’m glad you enjoyed the puzzles. And we’ll see next week if the poodle is the correct answer!
Beautiful picture. The verse fits it well. These laws get better and funnier each week. I’m going to guess #3. Fun puzzles!
Author
Thanks, Erika! We’ll see next week if it’s #3. And I’m glad you enjoy the puzzles!
I absolutely love the puzzles!!
Author
I’m glad, Hannah!
Again, it’s hard to know the made up law….lol! My guess this week is #3 “teenagers may not circle the town more than ten times an hour”. I remember as a teen there was a main road that teens or young adults liked to drive back & forth on Friday nights, or just park and watch people go by. I think they finally started cracking down on it years later though, it probably became problematic.
I love your picture and the scripture to go with it is one of my favorite. 🙂
Author
I’m glad you enjoyed the photo and verse! And we used to have a place that teenagers drove around and around…do they even do that anymore? We’ll see next week if it’s #3.
Beautiful photo for the scripture.

Thanks, Caryl! We’ll see next week if it’s #3.
Another translation of Psalm 46:10 says, “Cease striving, and know that I am God.” I love that! Not only do I need to “be still” but to “cease striving” in my mind and heart and just trust.
Oh, these ridiculous laws!! I would love to know the backstory on why they needed to be legislated! I’m going to guess #2…but who knows! 🙂
Author
I remember when I first read that translation, I loved it, too! We’ll see if it’s #2 next week. 😉
I’m going with #3 Patricia, back in my teenage years we had a Sconic and a Tastee Freeze beside each other and you’d spend hours circling around just to see who all was there, drive down the road then circle back again, it was the thing to do! Those were the good old days, this brought back some fun memories!
I love the verse, one of my favorites and beautiful picture of the Mississip.
Author
I remember those days well, Ms.Dottie. 😉 Seems like here they gather in a parking lot now…somehow that’s not the same thing. lol And I love to watch the Mississippi–I’ve been known to drive to Riverside Park in Memphis just to look at it. 🙂 We’ll see next week if it’s #3.
I think #4!
