Luck or Justice? Mystery Question

Patricia Bradley Mystery Question 27 Comments

According to Punxsutawney Phil, we’re in for 6 more weeks of winter. And my question is…just how hard would it have been for someone to hold an umbrella over Phil so he didn’t see his shadow???

And now onto more pressing business…I am at 76,000 words, closing in on the first draft! Yayay!!

Now for last week’s Mystery Question: Which blotter report is false? Three are actual reports that are on Police blotters, which is kinda hard to believe…
  1.  A caller from Meadowlark Court reported her purse was missing. Someone had come to look at her house, which was for sale, the day prior and the caller said that person may have stolen her purse. The woman later called back and said she found her purse. Her dog had stolen it.
  2. A caller from Gracie Road reported her boyfriend had gone outside for a cigarette and thirty minutes had passed. She could not find him. The boyfriend was found more than two hours later.
  3. A caller near Lake Place called and reported his wife had put all his clothes in a poke (bag) and set it on the front porch. When the wife was questioned, she readily admitted she had. She had scolded him for coming in drinking and he told her that he didn’t have to put up with that, and she could just put his clothes in a poke and he’d leave. That’s exactly what she did. And locked the door.
  4. A caller near the intersection of Banner Quaker Hill and Banner Lava Cap Roads reported a truck had tailgated his vehicle before passing it over a double yellow line. The driver then stopped his vehicle and confronted the caller, breaking the caller’s driver side mirror in the process. The driver left the scene after asking the caller if he wanted to fight.

And the answer is…#3 🙂 Congrats to Phyllis, Paula S (who said the sentence structure gave me away. lol), Jackie and Sandra O. Now for the story I promised in one of the comments. While #3 is a false blotter report, it actually happened, except the husband didn’t report it to the police. When my husband’s aunt got tired of her husband coming home tipsy, she would fuss at him, and every time he would reply: “just put my clothes in a poke and you won’t have to worry about me.” One day she did just that. She wrapped his clothes in a flat sheet and put them on the front porch, then locked the door. Scared him so, it was a whole month before he drank again.

Now for this week’s Mystery Question: Joe was driving through the parking lot at a local shopping center, and an RV stopped in front of him two or three times for no apparent reason and simply blocked the lane for two or three minutes each time. Finally, the two vehicles reached a place in the lot where Joe could pull around the RV after it stopped again. As he did, the driver called out something to him. Joe stopped, got out of his car, and started walking back to ask the driver what he wanted. The result was Joe ended up in court. Three of the following statements are true. One is false. But which one? Leave your answer in the comments.
  1. The driver of the RV pulled forward and bumped the left rear bumper of Joe’s car. Joe went back to his car to get his cell phone to call the police. The police arrived almost immediately because the RV driver had called before Joe could get his phone.
  2. The RV driver told the police he was the pastor of the church that owned the RV and that he was just sitting there and Joe backed into him. He had two witnesses, men who just happened to be standing around when the accident happened. So Joe got a summons to court for backing into the RV.
  3. Joe just happened to have a two of witnesses of his own, one who just happened to be videoing his daughter’s first driving lesson, and he caught the whole thing on his iPhone.
  4. This wasn’t the first time this pastor had tried this scam and he had the unfortunate luck to get the same judge who tried the other case. Joe’s case was dismissed.

Okay, Mystery Sleuths, which is the false answer? Leave your guess in the comments and I’ll enter you in a drawing for a $10 Starbucks, iTunes, or Amazon gift card at the end of the month.

Our winner for January is ….Edward! Random.org must really like you, Edward. Lol. I’ll send you a copy as soon as my books arrive, probably mid-May

Was the pastor hoisted with his own petard? Or did the victim have an ace in the hole?

Hey, Pat. Thanks again to you and Random.org! I used to comment that I never won anything and note that certain people won all the time. I’m almost feeling guilty now because others are going to start saying that about me. Maybe I just had to reach a certain age to start winning. LOL! I like Delores’s response. I’m picking #4 also. 😉

If I’m looking for the choice you made up, #1 and #3 are both good candidates; #3 has some word issues as if you had been composing it yourself. I’d be surprised if you’d choose #3 two weeks in a row, so I’ll go with #1, that the Rev. phoned the cops probably before the accident. Stranger things have happened. I’m very curious now to know the answer.

I Think 1 is the false statement. The other three seem to corroborate each other. In addition, this type of scam is not uncommon.

I’m sticking with Edwards answer of #4, he seems to be on a roll 😉

Like one of my other authors said, she’d like to throw Phil in the crockpot….lol! She also lives in NY so you know she’s had her share of winter, more than really. Thanks for another fun guessing game!

I’m going with number 3, Pat! Congrats on making such great progress on your novel! Yay! My own WIP is finally picking up some speed, too, but much farther to go to catch up with you. 🙂 Happy writing!
