Dumbest Crimes Yet is this week’s Mystery Question. Just when I think I can’t find any more dumb crimes, the criminals don’t let me down!
But first the verse and photo. This verse was on our screen yesterday morning when we came into church, and I loved the thought of God carrying us on eagle’s wings. A quick little aside…the sermon was on faith like that of a child and our visiting pastor, Matt Powell, ended the sermon with the story of another pastor, a kitten, a tree, and a little girl who had faith.
Faith of a child
It seems the pastor had a kitten up a skinny pine tree and the kitten would not come down. He had the bright idea that since he couldn’t climb the tree, he would use his pickup and a rope and bend it over so the kitten could hop to the ground.
Everything was going well until he had the tree bent far enough over that he thought he could reach the kitten, except the rope slipped off his truck trailer hitch and the pine tree acted like a catapult sailing the little kitten out of his yard. He searched for the kitten, but couldn’t find it.
A few weeks later he was at the grocery when he ran into one of his church members who told him something had happened a few weeks ago that she was still trying to figure out. It seems her daughter had been begging for a kitten, and the mother was so tired of saying no. So when her daughter asked if she prayed for a kitten and God gave her one, could she keep it? Thinking it was a safe way out, the mother agreed. Immediately the little girl knelt in the yard and prayed, asking God for a kitten. The church member looked at the pastor and said, “You’re not going to believe what happened next…As soon as she said Amen, this kitten dropped out of the sky at my daughter’s feet…”
And that’s what happens when you have the faith of a child…
Now for last week’s Mystery Question–More Mark Twainisms. ONLY ONE of these is a Twain quote. Three have been attributed to Twain, but he didn’t originate it. Can you guess which one he actually said?
- The coldest winter I ever spent was a summer in San Francisco.
- It is better to keep your mouth closed and let people think you are a fool than to open it and remove all doubt.
- If you tell the truth, you don’t have to remember anything.
- I would have written a shorter letter, but I did not have the time.
And the one that Mark Twain actually originated is…#3. Congrats to all who guess correctly.
Now for Dumbest Crimes Yet, this week’s Mystery Question. As usual, three are true crimes and I made up one. Can you guess which one?
- Police were called after locals complained of a man assaulting three people in the area. When he resisted, a police dog was sent in to assist in the arrest. That’s when the man grabbed and bit the dog on the head. It cost him eight months of his freedom.
- A Florida man returned home from a doctor’s appointment and got a surprise, and an eyeful, when he discovered a woman skinny-dipping in his pool. She refused to get out, and the police were called. Still, she refused and was hauled off to jail where she wouldn’t give her name. Like they couldn’t run her prints and get her mugshot.
- Police responded to an alarm at a liquor store and saw someone running from the back of the building. They gave chase, but lost him. However, when the two police officers returned to the liquor store, they found his phone where he’d dropped it at the back door. When they searched through the contacts there was one labeled Mom. Mom gave the police her son’s name.
- Another Florida resident needed a ride home early one morning. He reasoned that his best recourse was to steal a presumably unlit cop car that happened to be running. Unfortunately for the thief, a rather confused policeman was sitting in the driver’s seat as the thief tried unsuccessfully to break into the vehicle. When he finally saw the policeman he darted behind a nearby car, thinking he’d mastered the art of invisibility. He had not and the policman nabbed him.
Okay, Super Sleuths, which one did I make up? Leave your answer in the comments and I’ll enter you in an October drawing for a book from my library!

Hi DJ! Answers are all over the board. 🙂 We’ll see next week.
I’m so glad God carries us, and the image of doing it on eagles wings as the verse says, is one that sticks with me. Cute story of the catapulted cat.
Crazy crooks all. I think the most unlikely to be true is #3.

I’m glad you enjoyed the catapulted cat…Matt told it as the truth…I think…We’ll see next week if it’s #3.
I’ll go with #1 because the crook took a great risk of losing his face if he tried that!

Hi Delores! I can’t imagine someone biting a dog! We’ll see next week if it’s #1.
going with #2 although your criminals are usually not so easily discovered!
I love the verse. Ties in with Psalm 91 for me . love the story about the kitten! the little girl has Faith!

I love that verse, Laurie. Yes, she had Faith! We’ll see next week if it’s #2.
I love the picture and verse. You do such a good job of matching pictures with Scripture. I hope it doesn’t happen, but if you ever decide to retire from writing, you could do a great job for DaySpring designing the front of their cards.
I’m choosing #4. It’s hard to imagine a police officer sitting in the car while someone tries to break in. And it seems unlikely that the dumb criminal would not have somehow realized there was a person already in the car.

Why, thank you, Edward. I love writing too much to give it up, even now when I can’t seem to get started on this next book. lol. We’ll see next week if it’s #4…
Such a peaceful, yet powerful photo of the eagle and the Scripture that represents it!
Since I watched the church service and heard the kitten story, rereading it got me slap-happy laughing all over again! The faith of a child….
Now for more serious business of trying to decide whodunit. I ran into a similar situation with #2 when I was with the Sheriff’s Dept. Only she had on a tiny leopard skin suit, along with a moose hat and fur boots. She couldn’t believe we would arrest her. She was wrong.
I think you made up #4. Surely the guy wouldn’t be dumb enough to try to get in the car with the officer in the car. But then again, he might. After all these are dumb criminals. These make me shake my head in wonder.

Me, too, Barbara (head shaking)! I’m glad you liked the eagle meme. I love that scripture, and I’m still laughing about the kitten! Have a blessed day.
I know what you mean. It took me two days to stop laughing over that kitten story and now I’m all revved up for another two days. Lol. The pastor himself got tickled trying to tell it. Great endorphins for our bodies! Lol Blessings!

We’ll see, BN!
The catapulted kitten story is one of the funniest things I’ve read in a long time!! My teenage son and I were both laughing so hard we were crying. Thanks for the morning giggle! But what a wonderful illustration of faith.
I’m going to guess #1 for this week.

I love that kitten story, L. So glad I gave you and your son a bellylaugh this morning! We’ll see if it’s #1 next week.
I laughed so hard at the very sweet kitten story! I think you made up number 1 because dogs are so quick and twisty. I can’t see how the fellow would get ahold of the canine!
Author
Vera, we had women trying to stop their mascara from running Sunday. lol. Everyone was still laughing when we went to Sunday School. We’ll see if it’s #1 next week.
I am guessing #4. Cute kitten story. 🙂

Thanks, Caryl! We’ll see next week if it’s #1.
The kitten story is very similar to one in a novel many years ago by Karen Ball. It’s still funny. Thanks for the laugh. I’m hoping the made-up one is #1 because I don’t want any dogs to be hurt. Police dogs are probably more likely to be shot or stabbed I think.

Hi Sue! Good to “see” you. 🙂 I love the kitten story–it brightens my day every time I think about it. We’ll see next week if it’s #1. And I’d hate to see a dog hurt, too!
I’m going to go with #1 this week because I really don’t know what answer is the correct one, lol!
I love the kitten story! It goes to show you that you need to be careful what you pray (wish) for. I’m sure that mom learned a lesson 😉 Seriously though, to have the faith of a child is awesome!
I love the picture and verse, it also reminds me of the scripture that if you wait on the Lord, He will renew your strength & mount up with wings as eagles. One of my favorite verses!
Author
Mine, too, Trixi. And yes, we really need to be careful what we pray for! 😉 We’ll see next week if it’s #1.
I’ll guess #4 this time.
