Darwin Awards #3 is this week’s Mystery Question. I really hope you are enjoying these ’cause they are fun to find!
But first the photo and verse that I remembered to put in the post this time! I took the photo Labor Day as I came out of the gym. It was only after I looked at it on the computer that I saw the cross at the bottom (that’s an optical illusion rather than an actual cross). That is really neat.
Now for this week’s Darwin Awards #2 Mystery Question. Three of these stories are sadly true, and I made up a fourth one. Can you guess which one.
- Florida man. (In case you don’t get that, in days past, the name “Florida Man,” was synonymous with people from the state of Florida engaging in strange, irrational, or comical behavior.) This man took his boat out but didn’t wear a life preserver and he couldn’t swim. His boat floundered, but he wasn’t alone in the water, and soon local deputies rescued him. Undaunted, he found a friend to take him back on the lake for his boat… again without a life preserver, whereupon he jumped from his friend’s boat to his sinking boat and capsized it. His friend wasn’t able to get him in the boat…
- You are wearing body armor in a warzone. You spot an abandoned Macbook. You want the MacBook. Where to hide it? With quick reflexes, a Russian soldier slid the MacBook into his chest armor pocket, replacing a ballistic plate designed to save his life. He was killed in Irpin, and his body was retrieved, where they found the stolen iPad destroyed by the bullet that killed him.
- Authorities making a ‘welfare check’ found a man dead alone in his house–alone except for numerous species of snakes with free rein of the house, including black mambas, rattlesnakes, cobras, and a gigantic python. An autopsy showed the man indeed died from a poisonous snakebite.]
- Here’s another one involving gasoline…A man found an infestation of rats in his basement and decided to smoke them out. Unfortunately, he failed to move the gas can before lighting the match, and the flames followed the drops of gas to the can…
And the answer is…#4. Congrats to all who guessed correctly!
Now for this week’s Darwin Awards #3 Mystery Question. Three of these stories are sadly true, and I made up a fourth one. Can you guess which one.
- Perched on this rickety wooden stack of pallets, a 40-year-old convinced a colleague to forklift them to the ceiling. Anyone experienced with a haphazard construction of pallets can identify the problem with this and understand why it fell…
- A 71-year-old woman smoking outside a hospital died from third-degree burns after her oxygen ventilator ignited, setting fire to the plastic upholstery of her wheelchair.
- A 45-year-old man was hospitalized after taking home a rather large projectile he’d found using his metal detector at a Civil War battlefield (this is illegal by the way). Curious as to what was in it, he pounded it with a hammer, causing an explosion.
- Three men, three elephants — a perfect setting for a selfie, except for the shrubbery that got in the way. The men tried to drive the elephants around the shrubbery, only to have the bull elephants turn on them. This set up the perfect “you don’t have to run fast, just faster than the man in front of you” scenario which was unfortunate for the last man.
Okay Super Sleuths, which one did I make up? Leave your answer in the comments, and I’ll enter you in a drawing for a book from my library.
As you know, On the Edge of Trust will release on November 4 and is a Logan Point book. Ten years have passed since the first book in which Scott Sinclair figured prominently in the story. I always wanted to redeem him since he was a teenage alcoholic, and got to do that in On the Edge of Trust!
And now for the exciting part– my publisher has reduced the price of the entire Logan Point series! You can get Shadows of the Past for $2.99 (or free if you have KU). The other books in the series are on sale as well. You can get links here.
Grab your copy now so you’ll have Scott’s backstory — it is very exciting…
I’ll be on the road today and will answer comments once I reach my destination. 🙂
Now for this week’s song: Love me some Johnny Cash! And I’ve loved The Old Rugged Cross since the first time I heard it.

# 1 for me. I love the picture, the verse and of course, the song. Thank you!
Author
It looks like I did it again and miscounted the days resulting in the Mystery Question blog being posted a day early, DJ and everyone else. lol
We’ll see next week if it’s #1…
You made up number 4
Author
Hi Crystal! We’ll see next week!
#2
Author
Hi, Sharon. We’ll see…
I love Johnny Cash’s “Old Rugged Cross”! This week I’m going with number 4 because big elephants would be too intimidating to try to rearrange for a picture!
Author
Good morning, Priscilla! Johnny Cash’s gospel songs are amazing and I particularly like this one. We’ll see next week how your logic works out…
How did I miss reading and responding to last week’s? These are brutal and fatal mistakes! For this week I’ll go w/ #3 although a cousin of mine married a fellow who did wonder what blasting caps could do, and as a teenager used a hammer on one in his dad’s garage and blew off both his hands. He ended up with hooks for life, not very convenient for most activities.
Author
No, Delores, hooks would not be very convenient…and what a price to pay for curiosity. We’ll see next week if it’s #3.
Stunning photo of clouds, Pat. I can’t wait to read what Barbara sees hiding in them! Great verse choice, too. You mentioned the cross being an optical illusion. When my wife and I visited East Berlin when Germany was still divided, there was a communications tower with a globe at the top. The reflected sunlight formed a cross, much to the consternation of the atheist authorities. See: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fernsehturm_Berlin
Thanks for the video of the Johnny and June singing that wonderful old hymn. That hymn was sung at a friend’s memorial service I attended last Saturday.
OK. Darwin Awards:
#1. That dumb stunt certainly qualifies.
#2. It’s not like people haven’t been warned about fire and oxygen.
#3. There is a lot of unexploded ordinance in former battle fields all over the world.
#4. A selfie with elephants. What could possibly go wrong?
I can see some people doing any one of these. Stab in the dark: I think you made up #3.
Author
Thanks for the link, Tim! I love that the sun formed a cross! We’ll see next week if your stab in the dark works. And I thought of Barbara when I posted the photo. 🙂
I’m going with number 4.
Author
We’ll see, Jean…
Haha, Tim as soon as that photo popped up my brains started seeing images right and left. My first thoughts were, wow a spiritual battle between good and evil. As the photo got closer to the bottom there was the brighter yellow, which to me, meant victory in Jesus. . .and then in the right was the cross. I will admit, I did give a shout of triumph!
I also saw a puppy on his back, a goose, a reindeer, and a person with a mohawk haircut.
Pat, that phrase, “the LORD is the everlasting God, “ was the victory that brought on the shout. Powerful photo and very inspiring.
Going with #1

I’ll have to go back and find your animals in the clouds, Barbara…and I thought of you when I posted the photo, wondering (like Tim) whoat you would see…
Haha. Oh my goodness. My ADHD brain was going crazy looking at all the pics in the clouds. The guy with the Mohawk is a little past the middle on the left just above the bright yellow cloud. The puppy on his back was two clouds past the bright yellow one. The reindeer is to the right of the yellow cloud. The goose is at the bottom, to the right of the middle over a pine tree.
See if you can find them?! Lol
Author
Love your visuals, Barbara! Glad you were able to point them out to me. 🙂
How about #4.
Author
We’ll see, Sally Jo!
Thank you for Johnny Cash and “The Old Rugged Cross”. I miss hearing a choir and the hymns I grew up with. So many churches now have contemporary music.
Author
Thank goodness we still have one traditional service with the old hymns, Susan! And Sunday nights we always sing the old hymns because that’s when the old folks come. lol
I am guessing #4 is made up. I don’t know much about elephants but I just don’t see three bull elephants hanging out. A bull elephant would more likely be with a female elephant, I would think.
Great picture and verse. I love The Old Rugged Cross.
Thank you for the book I won in your giveaway! I received it today.
Author
Great logic, Carolyn…although those who win the Darwin Award rarely use logic. ;-D But we’ll see if it works this time. So glad the book arrived. Hope you enjoy it!

Author
We’ll see, Linda!
I am guessing #3.
Author
Hi, Gloria. #3 is proving to be popular…
Beautiful picture and well-matched verse and song. Are you sure those aren’t angels hovering over the cross? The song must have been recorded at a Billy Graham Crusade.
1. An accident waiting to happen.
2. Ditto
3. Did he think it was a time capsule?
4. Why would anyone think they could herd elephants?
I have to go with #3. How did he get a metal detector into a Civil War battlefield? Aren’t they guarded? Same question about getting a large projectile out without being stopped. I wanted to get rid of some old shotgun shells years ago. It never once occurred to me to hit them with a hammer. I think this one was made up.
Author
Thanks, Edward. I love that song! Your logic matches Tim’s again…you two think alike. lol We’ll see how you fare next week…Oh, and in my area there are many Civil War battlefields that it would be hard to police. Of course, if you get caught…that’s another matter.
I used to work as a receptionist in a hospital lobby. I was amazed at the number of patients pulling an IV pole to go outside and smoke. Some looked like they could barely walk!
Elvis and now Johnny Cash. Two of my favorites.
I’m going with #4 once again.
Author
Hi Gail…I’ve known of people doing that in a hospital…nicotine is so addictive. Yes, Elvis and Johnny Cash! I may try and find the song the two did together, maybe with another person…We’ll see if it’s #4 next week.
I will go with #3 because a projectile! I thought lead bullets and cannonballs were used in the Civil War. The gunpowder was not in the bullet.
Author
Great logic, Paula! We’ll see next week. 🙂
#3
Author
We’ll see, Mary P.!
I’ll go with #3 this week.
Author
Three seems to be very popular, Kelly!
I think two. Photo and verse were inspirational.
Author
Thaks, Judy! I’m glad your enjoyed. We’ll see if it’s #2 next week!
I’m going with #4.
Author
Hi Diana! We’ll see next week…
I’m going with #4, think it would be hard to corral three elephants for pictures.
I love your photo Patricia and I was thinking how neat you were able to get the cross in it too. Amazing it was only on camera! And I did find Barbara’s goose, it’s pretty easy to spot, still searching for the others though.
I’m looking forward to the new book release, and the fact the first ones are on sale. I’ll be checking these out! Praying for you traveling mercies.
Author
Be sure to read Shadows of the Past, Dottie! Scott Sinclair is a point of view characeter and plays a leading roll in the first book On the Edge of Trust is set ten years later with Scott as the hero…we’ll see if it’s #4 next week…glad you could see Barbara’s animals. lol

We’ll see, BN!
Another lovely photo and wonderful verse!
Sadly, I’m not a visionary like Barbara but I do enjoy reading what she sees in the clouds. I did, however see the cross.
I enjoy many of the old hymns, but also many contemporary songs. This was a good one by June & Johnny Cash.
These mystery questions are doozies! I don’t guess too many correctly, however I certainly enjoy reading them.
Thank you, Pat, for blessing us, inspiring us and challenging us!
Author
So glad you enjoy the posts, Mary G! I enjoy creating them, althogh the Mystery Question is really hard sometimes. 😉 We’ll wsee next week what the correct answer is…
#2, I hope is false!
Author
I know how you feel, Barbie D! We’ll see if it’s #2 next week…
