August Mystery Questions Week 1

Patricia Bradley Mystery Question 49 Comments

Ps27:13 I remain confident of this: I will see the goodness of the Lord in the land of the living.

Another beautiful sky discovered in a walk in the neighborhood.

Can you believe it’s August? Hopefully, it’s Tuesday this time for the August Mystery Questions Week 1! This week I’m going with crime reports. Have you ever read the crime reports in your newspaper? I don’t usually, but my local newspaper reduced their pages and I find myself reading every word, even those. A couple caught my attention so this week I’m featuring three of the scenarios I found in the Mystery Questions. Actually the scenarios could be titled Dumb Crime Reports. Or maybe dumb homeowners.

As for my deadline, I’m sort of staying on my word count each day, or at least for the week. 🙂 At the rate I’m going I should have the first draft finished by October 5. I always appreciate prayers!

Now for last week’s Mystery Question: Four crimes, three are true. Can you guess which one I made up?
  1. Don’t speed if you’re carrying a bag marked “bag full of drugs” in your vehicle–you might go to jail. That’s what happened to two men exceeding twenty-five miles over the limit. K-9 dogs alerted to illegal substances and a search of the car produced the marked bag.
  2. A 20-year-old college student booked into jail for underage drinking was seen on surveillance video attempting to steal packages from beneath the Christmas tree at the police department as he left the building. The cops let him go since the boxes were empty.
  3. A man activated an air-horn and flashing blue lights in an attempt to pull a van over. When the occupants of the van identified themselves as police officers, the man fled the scene, only to be picked up a short time later.
  4. Two burglars had a falling-out over the division of the spoils after breaking into a home. One burglar took to Facebook to complain about his partner. Unfortunately, the police were monitoring his FB page, and he gave them the evidence they needed to arrest him.

And the answer is…#4. Congrats to all of you who guessed correctly!

And now for this week’s Mystery Question: Earlier this week I was reading my paper and ran across the Crime Reports. As always, three are true and I made up one.
  1. A woman returned home from the casino and found her side door standing open. She called 911 and claimed $500 was missing from her freezer. Deputies found nothing disturbed and no sign of forced entry, and they questioned her again. She admitted she’d lost the $500 at the casino and feared her husband would get angry.
  2. A woman pulled up to her apartment building and saw the maintenance man walking out of an apartment with a pistol in his hand, that he immediately tried to hide behind his back. He had previously said he had a bullet for her and her friends.
  3. A woman said her husband came into the bathroom and they argue over an empty bag of methamphetamine and she called 911. Deputies said she appeared to be under the influence of a narcotic and arrested her for possession of paraphernalia and the baggie with drug residue.
  4. A woman reported that overnight someone entered her unlocked car and stole $300 cash from her purse. She said the purse was hanging over the driver’s headrest.

Okay, Super Sleuths, which story did I make up? Leave your answer in the comments and I’ll enter you in a drawing for a $10 Amazon gift card at the end of the month.

And the winner of a book from my library is…Gloria A. I’ll be in touch!

Hmm. The only one that doesn’t seem to be reporting a crime is #2, so I’ll go with that one. The man may have threatened in the past, but apparently not in this incident.

I’m going against the grain here and selecting #4. I know it’s not often you use the same number twice in a row, but I think you did this time. Hanging a purse over the driver’s headrest sounds more careless than leaving it in a shopping cart unattended. It’s like waving a flag to say “pick me.” It also seems like a lot of bother to place it there and have to reach to get it when exiting the car. I suppose that would be a good reason to just leave it. If true, the rook was not dumb at all but simply taking advantage of an open invitation.

Wow, you have an interesting newspaper with these crime reports. Lots of ideas for stories! It’s tough to choose but I think I am going with #3.
