The Desires of Your Heart

The tagline for my website is Delight yourself in the Lord, and He will give you the desires of your heart. Psalm 37:4 Delight yourself in the Lord…what does that really mean?

For me, it means drinking in His word, talking to Him, listening to Him…trusting Him enough to give Him my desires. That’s now, but when I first claimed this verse for myself, I thought if I just loved God, He would give me what I wanted. And I wanted to write romantic suspense, I wanted to be published, and I wanted it right now. Then, as I grew as a Christian and grew closer to Him, a funny thing happened. I began to ask Him to put His desires in me, and my wants changed. It became less about me and more about what He wanted me to write.

I think that works for any desire we have. We have to be willing to let our dreams go in order to receive the dreams God has for us. And I’ve learned His dreams are so much better than mine.

What does Delight yourself in the Lord mean to you?

I LOVE that verse. My parents gave me a bracelet with that verse engraved on it. My problem: A lot of times I want to focus on the end of the verse without remembering the beginning…delighting myself in the Lord. I can honestly say when I *truly* do find my delight in him, my desires line up with His and the truth of that verse shines.

You are absolutely right, Melissa. I’m probably going to post next Monday on verse 7 of that Psalm: Rest in the Lord and wait patiently for Him…

Isn’t it a great verse to meditate on! God is so good to show us how He wants us to delight ourselves in Him. Thanks for stopping by Barbara!

Life is a journey. I love what they say, “It’s not how you get to your destination, but the journey itself that matters.”

We each have been given a journey. That’s what makes all of our stories so different and exciting. I count myself blessed each and every day that I get a chance to continue my journey with God.

I’ve been “delighting myself in the Lord’ this past week whenever i’ve been outside. It’s been chilly here in central Florida, with a bracing wind. But the sun still shines in a brilliantly blue sky. I close my eyes and praise God for His creation.
