Reader Friday: The Priority Unit

Patricia Bradley Reader Friday 29 Comments

What a short week it’s been. Because I’m trying to finish Revenge for the Kill Zone anthology, I’ve only read one book this past week, but I really enjoyed it. The Priority Unit by Susan Page Davis kept me reading way past my bedtime, so I’ve gotten by on only six hours sleep a night. And I had to make myself put it down so I could get those six hours.

In reading Susan’s book, I realized how lucky, or maybe I should say blessed, I am that I grew up in the South where going to Sunday school and church was as normal as breathing. It is almost beyond my understanding that it’s not that way everywhere. But neither Harvey nor Jennifer learned anything about Jesus when they were young. It was fun watching them learn about things I almost take for granted.

What I liked best about it was the relationship between Detective Harvey Larson and Jennifer Wainthrop. It really resonated with me. He’s sixteen years older than she is and worried that he might be too old. He is such an honorable man who was faithful to a wife that deserted him until she died, yet he had no compunction about hacking into the company where Jennifer worked to check her out. Of course, it caused quite a bit of trouble for everyone. But I don’t want to give away too much. Here’s the back cover blurb:

A missing man.
A mysterious computer program –
Even the people constructing it don’t know what it will do.
On the worst night of Harvey Larson’s life, his partner is killed and his wife, Carrie, walks out on him. Ten years later, the Portland, Maine police detective has learned to cope with his grief and depression. When he and the Priority Unit investigate the disappearance of software designer Nick Dunham, he meets a young woman who will change his life. Jennifer Wainthrop was the last person to admit seeing Dunham alive.
Harvey and his partner, Eddie Thibodeau, stay a step ahead of a bomber and put together the clues that tell the truth: Dunham’s kidnapping and the bombings are one case, and Jennifer is caught in the middle. News that Carrie has committed suicide may plunge Harvey back into despair. Harvey turns to God for help untangling his complicated life. He finds strength in his faith as he attempts to save Jennifer from the same grim fate that claimed Nick. But Jennifer must depend on her own wits and God alone when the killer gets too close.

I enjoyed trying to figure out the mystery threaded through Harvey and Jennifer’s journey to redemption and love. It’s the first in this series and I can’t wait to read the next one – Fort Port! I’ve already downloaded it on my Kindle.

The Priority Unit is available at Amazon and other bookstores.

What are you reading this week? And/or What is the biggest factor in deciding to buy a book? The cover? The first page? The Author? The genre?

I would have to say the cover is the first thing that draws me to a book! Right now I have a stack of books from the Library that need to be read! I just can’t figure out which one to start with!!

Pat, thank you so much for featuring my book! This story was a long time in the making and includes many things that stayed with me from the many years I lived in Maine. For instance, a car bombing–which is very rare in real life–actually occurred in Maine while I was first writing this book. I can’t tell you how tickled I am that you liked my book!

Thanks Pat and Susan. This one looks so good! I’ll have to say a cover does catch me in first but also I have my favorite authors, of which Pat is one! Then I look at the back cover. Susan, this one draws one in!
I’m presently reading The Mark of the King by Jocelyn Green. This one of my fav genres historical Christian fiction but suspense , such as writing by you two ,is a close second. Thanks for the review!

Hi, Paula! Thank you so much for reading my books! And I’m so glad you enjoy them. I occasionally read historical Christian fiction, but my default is suspense. 🙂 Thanks for dropping by.

I am drawn in by a good cover! I have read two ARCs in the last two days – Cold Terror by Susan Sleeman & Cold as Ice by Julie Mulhern. I also finished an ARC of All in All Journaling Devotional: Loving God Wherever You Are. I was part of the Launch Team. I ALWAYS read the blurb & the FIRST paragraph. I really need to be CAUGHT by the first paragraph. Pat you do a fantastic job writing compelling first paragraphs! I really like romantic suspense. But I like many genres.

Lisa, thank you for the compliment! I agonize over that first paragraph. lol. Mainly because that’s what I read when I’m deciding if I’ll buy a book. Thanks for stopping by and commenting!

I’m reading The Reluctant Duchess by Roseanna White. When considering a book purchase, I first consider the genre and then the author. 🙂

I have read Logan Point 2, 3, and 4 this week! Will there be #5? Suspense in Christian fiction is my go to read. I enjoy Dee Henderson and Terri Blackstock as well. So glad I found your books!

Hi Beverly! Sorry I missed your comment until now. Thank you so much for reading the Logan Point series! One day there I will write Scott’s story as well as Wade Hatcher’s. 🙂

Oh Wow! Beverly. And thank you very much. So glad you enjoyed the Logan Point series. There eventually will be a book 5 and 6: Scott’s story and Wade Hatcher’s. But right now I’m working on fictional cold case stories. Justice Delayed was the first and Justice Buried comes out September 5. 🙂 And I’m so glad you found my books, too! Visit again! I give away at least one book a month and often more…and tell your friends about my blog. 😉

Ok hopefully third times the charm for me! I’ve tried to leave a comment twice last night but they didn’t go through so I gave up! I hope I can replicate it.

I just got done with “No Other Will Do” and “Heart on the Line” by Karen Witemeyer (the latter I read in one day because I could not put it down!). I’ve started “A Name Unknown” by Roseanna White, the first in a new series called Shadows Over England. I’m about 100 pages in and loving it so far, but I do adore her writing in the first place!

Since I’m part of many author street/ early reader teams, that determines when I read and what I read. I don’t often get to read just for “fun”, those books that aren’t for review purposes. Now don’t get me wrong, reading IS fun no matter if I am required to review or not. I hope you understand my meaning. As far as buying books, I don’t often buy books. I get many of them provided by the author and/or publisher for review. I also enter many book contests and have won quite a few that way. I utilize my library a LOT, either paperback or ebook or use the interlibrary loan system! And I recommend books for them to purchase. I peruse yard sales and thrift stores. Barring all that, I will wait until a book is deeply discounted on Amazon. Like so many other people, we have a tight budget that doesn’t include a lot of extras so I must watch what I buy. Oftentimes new books are quite expensive for me. I will usually choose my book by genre first (whatever I’m in the mood for) and then author.

Thanks for spotlighting Susan’s book “Priority Unit”. I didn’t realize she wrote in the suspense genre but know she writes historical. Guess I’ll have to put this one on my very large want-to-read list!

Hi Trixi (Anonymous). So sorry about not being able to comment. I’m checking with my IT guy to make sure it’s not on this end. Everyone is recommending Roseanna White, so I will definitely add her to my list of authors. Thanks for stopping by!

Thank you for posting my comment! It’s weird that it came out as “anonymous” as I always sign my name…I guess you have to blame internet gremlins..haha!

Thanks, Sally. Several have commented on the cover. We’re trying to find the right pictures for the Book 5 cover right now–always a chore, but when it comes together you know it was worth it.
