New Year’s Goals?

Patricia Bradley Mystery Question 20 Comments

It’s the third day of 2017, and I haven’t made New Year’s resolutions because I knew I wouldn’t keep them. I do set goals, like writing something at least five days a week, and reading a hundred books.

And for the past few years, I’ve also chosen a word for the coming year to focus on. In the past, I’ve chosen joy, humility, courage, whatever word God laid on my heart. My word for this year is Expectation. I’m embracing the new year, expecting God to work in great ways in me and my life.

How about you? Do you make resolutions? Or set goals? Have you tried choosing a word to focus on for the year?

Now for last week’s Mystery Question and winner of Always Watching:

A woman in Chicago stopped to fill her gas tank. When she got back in her car, she noticed her purse was open and her wallet was gone. She reported a green van had been at the station. Half an hour later, the police arrested the culprit. What was her mistake?

  1. She bought gas at the same station as her victim, at the same time. An off-duty police officer happened to be in the store and made the arrest after the victim received an email that her card had been used to buy gas twice at the same station in ten minutes.
  2. She drove 50 yards to a McDonalds and bought her children burgers. When the police cruised the parking lot and saw the van, they detained her and found the burgers had been bought with the victim’s credit card.
  3. The thief immediately used the credit card at a drugstore the victim and her husband owned. The husband recognized his wife’s card and called the police.
  4. When the thief threw the wallet away, she accidently left her own driver’s license in it. The police quickly found her.

And the answer is #2. The victim had activated alerts on her phone to show when her card was used at gas stations and fast food places. And when the woman bought the burgers, the victim was alerted and informed the police who quickly found the green van and a receipt for the victim’s credit card.

And the winner is: Edward Arrington!

Now for this week’s Mystery Question:

A man was on trial for the armed robbery of a convenience store in a district court when he fired his lawyer. Even though the man was doing a fair job of defending himself, he was convicted. Why?

  1. The DA had a video that plainly showed not only the defendant’s face as he held a gun on the manager but his first name that was stitched above his pocket.
  2. He’d signed a confession and his excuse that he was too high to realize what he was doing didn’t fly with the jury.
  3. He accused the convenience store manager of lying and then said, “I should of blown your head off.” The defendant paused, then quickly added, “if I’d been the one that was there.”
  4. The robber discharged his weapon in the store and the recovered bullet matched a gun that was registered to the defendant.

Okay, Super Sleuths, which one is it? And if you tweet, would you please tweet one of the following? Thanks!

And don’t forget Justice Delayed releases later this month.

#1 just struck me as true. Happy New Year! I’m not very good at keeping resolutions but here goes— commit to Excercise more. My word for this year is Encouragement.

I am guessing it is #1. It just seems a person who would be dumb enough to fire his lawyer would be dumb enough to do that.

I think number three due to his poor choice of firing his lawyer. I also don’t make resolutions either though. Faith is a word I live by and more than ever I believe that when God places

Hi Sherry. So agree that when God places a need before us, He provides a way to meet that need! And if He calls us to something, He will equip us. And we’ll see if the correct answer is #3 next week. I like the way you analyzed it. 🙂

I like #3! I haven’t made a lot of resolutions but I chose a word: venture and my verse is Isaiah 43:19 which has shown up several times in various places the past few days. (I’m listening, God!) Congrats on the new release.

If I’m not too late to get in on this one, I’ll choose #3! Sounds like what a criminal might say when trying to defend himself instead of a lawyer. Get a lawyer! 😉
