E-book or Print?

Patricia Bradley Mystery Question 27 Comments

Did you know the Kindle turns ten years old this year? After I read this, I tried to remember when I got my first Kindle and realize I don’t have to wonder–I can check my Amazon account. As an aside, is Amazon smart or what? Pre-Kindle I didn’t have an Amazon account, but I opened one as soon as I got my first Kindle. 😉

When I checked, I discovered I bought my first e-book December 24, 2010. That’s not surprising since I received the Kindle as a Christmas gift. I also received a Nook from my daughter and it was a hard choice to decide which one to keep. But since I had already opened the Kindle and bought a book, I kept it. And my daughter got to keep the Nook. 🙂

Since that first book (which was Love on a Dime by Cara Lynn James) I’ve bought 390 books on that Kindle. I have an additional 341 books on another, newer Kindle. So that means I have 731 books altogether. How many of them have I read? That, I’m not sure of, but I figure at least half of them. And someday, I hope to read all of them.

So I guess you’ve figured out I’m fond of my Kindle. It’s not that I don’t like print books–I do and I still buy print books, but there is no way I could house 731 books! And that’s what I like about owning an e-reader. That and being able to make the print bigger!

This week I want to pose another question along with the Mystery Question. What’s your preference? Print book or e-reader?

Now on to the Mystery Question from last week. Which response did I make up?
  1. “Whoops, that’s the fake one… here you go; this is the real one.”
  2. “Would you hold my gun so I can get my license out?”
  3. “What? You need a license to drive?”
  4. “What’s wrong, Ossifer? I swear to drunk I’m not! And really, there is no blood in my alcohol.”

And the answer is…#2. Congrats Delores and Trixi for getting it right!

Now for a new set of reports from the Police Blotter: One is FALSE, the rest, unfortunately, are true.
  1. 12:42 a.m. 200 block of Howard Street. A man reported someone used his password and hacked into his Farmville account on Facebook and as a result, he lost a year’s worth of work and all his crops.
  2. A resident of the 100 block of Beck Mill Road reported her car was stolen. The car was found on her lot, but she hadn’t recognized it with snow on it.
  3. A man called the police to report that he suspected the marijuana his friend sold him was “laced with something” and he had felt crazy ever since smoking it. He wanted to see a doctor.
  4. A man called to report that someone had stolen the saddle on his horse while he was inside a bar drinking. The horse was not stolen.

Okay, Mystery Sleuths, which is the report I made up? Leave your comments and be entered in a drawing for a copy of Susan May Warren’s Wild Montana Skies (or another book from my personal library if you’ve read it)

My problem with print books, Elaine, is finding room to store them. But I’m about to remedy that. Starting this week, I’m going to review a book a week (or maybe every 2 weeks) and then give it away…do you know how hard that will be? But I just don’t have a lot of room. lol

I used to say I would never get one of those e-readers. Then it happened. In 2010 I got my first Kindle Keyboard 3G. I do still like print books and I read several a year but my Kindles get more use. I have 8755 items on my Kindle. Some of those are magazines but most are books. Have I read them all? Nope. Will I ever read them all? Nope. Will I stop getting Kindle books? Nope. I have read more than half the content. I do admit to going on freebie binges in the early years. I looked for free books every day, I found a few gems in my searching but found way too many clunkers. I’m more discerning in my choices now. I like being able to change the font size. I also like the “text to speech” feature on my Kindle Fire (only after I’ve read some of the book to get a feel for the characters) because sometimes I don’t want to stop reading just because I have to do the dishes.

Wow Andrea, 8755 items! You beat me by a country mile. And I did the same thing when I first got my Kindle–downloaded a LOT of freebies. I’ve never tried the speech feature. Thanks for stopping by!

I prefer to read novels on kindle, because I can enlarge print, carry tons of books with me in a compact size and because it’s lighter than most books. However, I greatly prefer print for reference/non-fiction books, where I want to be able to easily and quickly flip back and forth.

As for the police blotter examples, they all sound ridiculously believable, so I’m going to go with the most realistic one being the one that’s false–#4

Sandra, I’m like you about reference/non-fiction. I want to be able to physically go to a page when I need to. And I can put little tabs on a print book so I know where to look. Thanks for stopping by today!

I’ll pick #2. I prefer holding a print book in my hands. But I have a good many books on my iPad. Not as many as you, Pat! I keep putting free ones on from Amazon. Including one I won, maybe you’ve heard of it! Justice Delayed! You are correct about being able to increase the font size. However, I am encountering a problem: IPad thumb– from holding the device so I can read all of the text. Or I’m just gettin’ old! Blessings!

My first ebook purchase was July 2011 and was Pam Hillman’s Stealing Jake. I like print books, but love being able to carry so many books around on a kindle. I’m going to go with #2 because I love snow and didn’t get enough of it this past year lol.

I got Stealing Jake about that time, too, Sally. Wasn’t that a great book! Pam lives about 4 hours from me and we did a book tour together right before Christmas in 2015, going to different Lifeway Stores. And stayed in the neatest B&B. And you can have my snow if we get any. 🙂

I pick #2. I love print and Kindle….depends on how I feel. Had sg. and Kindle was MUCH more comfortable to read while recuping.

#4 Love my Kindle Paperwhite (2nd one)! Also still buy hardbacks – signed editions in a collection. I will buy a book for other purposes but it just depends on its use. I believe every room should have a ceiling to floor bookshelf! I am married to a General Contractor & Master Carpenter so I am BLESSED to have many, many built in bookshelves. However, as my daughter pointed out, I do need a Library. We have a room we could convert only it’s upstairs and that makes it less appealing to me. Who knows? If you knew how many books I have in my collection, it might not be a bad idea!!

Lis, I’ve heard a lot of good things about the Kindle Paperwhite and have been thinking about getting one. Is it better than the others? I would KILL (Joking) for a floor to ceiling bookshelf! Thanks so much for visiting my blog!

  7. Dana Michael

My kids got me a kindle in 2011 for Mother’s day. Best gift ever. I wouldn’t have known half of the authors that I know now. I love the fact I can hold a ton of books and keep them in one place. Don’t get me wrong, I will still read a print book, but I much prefer a kindle. Another reason, I like to read in bed while hubs snores. I don’t wake him up with a lamp on.

Oh, Dana, I can just see you reading in bed. lol. And I so agree about having all those books! I guess I should have asked which e-reader everyone preferred ’cause I was just wondering which e-reader you used.

      1. Dana Michael

Patricia, I have two e readers. The one the kids got me is just a plain kindle. I love it because I can read it outside. I also have a kindle fire that I got about 6 months ago. I love it because I can get on the internet and all that jazz. I can’t read outside on that one though. So, I do use both of them interchangeably.

I choose #3 as the fake report. As far as e-readers or paper, I prefer paper. I read some books on my iPad but those are typically books that I really want to read and can’t find in the library or an occasional ebook I receive from an author to read and review before the book is released in paper. As far as I can recall, I have not bought any ebooks but I buy paper or hardcover from time to time.

Definitely print for me! I stare at a computer screen all day for work, so I really don’t want to do that for fun. 🙂 The print copy is a little more effective for getting me out of “editing” mode. Plus, I’m just an old-fashioned girl who believes a book should be made out of paper! 🙂 As for the mystery, #3 is hilarious! But sadly, probably really could happen. So I’m going to guess #1 is false.

I,too, got my first Kindle in 2010. It was a Fire HD 7″ and I used it for everything. This past Christmas I bought myself a new Kindle Fire HD 8″ and boy is it an improvement from the old one….Love it!! However, I still prefer print books. Nothing beats the feel, smell, touch of a real book and there’s something about turning real pages . 🙂

As for this weeks question, I’d have to go with #3 even though I can see this being true.
